At the next meeting of the Glasgow Forum for Scots Law, Professor Jane Mair will speak on “Principles in Practice - 30 years of the Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985” The Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985: “a very good piece of legislation”

This quote is typical of the views to emerge from interviews with solicitors, advocates and judges as part of recently completed research into financial provision on divorce in terms of the Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985 (Mair, Mordaunt and Wasoff, Built to Last, 2016). After 30 years in practice, the consensus is that this is a piece of legislation which works well and key to its continued success is the way it was constructed.  How does it work and why does it work? What can we learn from this particular statute about law reform more generally?
