Lighting up our Law Community

Lighting up our Law Community

As we reach the solstice in the northern hemisphere we thought it appropriate to share a couple of the lights produced by our law school community, lights intended to highlight the contribution of women to law and legal change, to guide us through the darkness, and to help us see more clearly the work that is still needed to make us an inclusive and just society.

Law School doctoral candidate Janet Burgess shares our first 'star’: Gina Miller (left). People can disagree about her politics but as a campaigner on several fronts her grit and determination in the face of major challenges, personal and racist abuse are outstanding. As Glasgow-born Helena Kennedy QC says she is ‘a heroine for our times’.

And our second star is one representing Ruth Bader Ginsburg (right), Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court, who sadly died on 18 September this year. Maria Fletcher posted a tribute to ‘RBG , this notorious woman of law and Janet Burgess here represents her in her characteristic black legal dress with white lace collar, and Red, Blue, and Green to mark her initials. Janet wants to thank the wonderful Diane McGrattan in CREATe for the inspiration to knit this one!

As 2020 draws to a close we will continue working on our lights and look forward to sharing more with you in the New Year. Please get in touch if you want to share your own creations or, if you’re new to crafting but feel passionately about representing a particularly inspiring woman for you, let us know, email a one line bit of text and we will get crafty on your behalf! Up our sleeves we have lights to Mary Barbour, the Trident Three, the Glasgow Girls, Marie Popelin and more…

Until next year!
